For the latter if you installed xdm or gdm you should have a login screen. As for the Ubuntu splash if you left it, it should still be displayed. Xfce is a great light window manage...In short yes. Xfce is a great light window manager. Keep in mind the less Gnome packages you install the better. This is where any computer with limited processing power gets bogged down.
